Ultrasonic Cutting

Sonics & Materials offers several different styles of Ultrasonic cutting. A process born from the ultrasonic welding division, ultrasonic cutting uses the sonic vibration in conjunction with a knife blade to produce a process that allows the knife to cut through material as if the knife were heated.

There is the guillotine style of cutting horn as seen below. This style is used to great effect in the de-gating process. The horn can be adjusted in width to suit virtually any application, allowing for a gate to be cut off in one hit of the knife. This also promotes the ability to reach into places a standard nipper system can not by having a very narrow blade.

 

 

Sonics also offers a blade style cutting horn as seen below. This style allows you to cut more like a traditional knife would but with the advantage the ultrasonic vibration gives you. This is best suited for trimming applications or where the plastic is thick. It can be used in a de-gating application as well if the gates are extra thick.
